For decades, the benefits of fluoride to our dental health has been touted by experts and exemplified by extensive testing. Treating your teeth to fluoride, either in toothpaste, mouthwash, fluoride-treated tap water, or any combination of the above, has been proven to significantly increase your protection against tooth decay (dental caries). Dr. Corbet Locke, your Waco dentist, describes a new method that can multiply the already considerable dental advantages of fluoride.
That Little Something Extra
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that you brush your teeth at least twice a day to optimize your oral health. New research from Sweden, however, suggests adding to that for even greater protection against cavity formation. Researchers at the University of Gothenburg’s Sahlgrenska Academy, while conducting scientific research on a new toothpaste that boasts three times as much fluoride, have discovered that additional fluoride treatment for your teeth throughout the day can improve your teeth’s protection by up to four times. In the study, 16 volunteers were observed using different kinds of toothpastes and various methods of brushing teeth. The researchers learned that those who used high-fluoride toothpaste three times a day quadrupled their protection compared to volunteers who used regular toothpaste twice a day.
It’s All in the Technique
Researchers also found that your teeth and gums can benefit from a massaging application of the toothpaste, as opposed to simply brushing your teeth. A new method of application was developed that involved essentially massaging high-fluoride toothpaste onto your teeth instead of brushing. The massage method proved to be as effective as a third brushing in increasing the fluoride presence in the mouth.
