Did you know that you are your mouth’s best ally? Although the ritual may seem trivial after years of repeating it, brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice a day is vital to maintaining your mouth’s health. However, if repetition causes you to lose focus on your hygiene routine, then neglect can become your mouth’s worst enemy. To help you get the most out of your daily dental hygiene routine, Waco dentist, Dr. Corbet Locke, offers these tips for proper oral health care.
Good Dental Hygiene Tips
- The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that you brush your teeth at least twice a day, and floss at least once, to adequately control plaque buildup. Preferably, you should brush and floss before bedtime for extra protection while you sleep.
- Do not be fooled into believing that any old toothpaste will do simply because it tastes minty. Use toothpaste that contains fluoride to help keep your tooth enamel strong and increase its cavity fighting power.
- Be sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush with the ADA seal of approval on its packaging. Using a toothbrush with rough bristles, or brushing your teeth too harshly, can strip your teeth of enamel and leave them vulnerable to infection and decay.
- While daily maintenance is your responsibility, your smile still requires professional care in the form of periodic dental checkups and cleanings. Schedule and attend your checkup every six months, or sooner if Dr. Locke recommends it.
