Receiving a Dental Crown

added on: November 23, 2013

A tooth that has been made vulnerable by bruxism (teeth grinding), decay, or a variety of other factors may eventually require extraction if it is not restored. In most cases, a tooth that is restored from this condition will require a dental crown. Strong and durable, dental crowns are hollow prosthetic teeth that are design to fit over the top of a damaged tooth. By doing so, they can improve the appearance of the tooth while also lending it strength to make it functional once again and protect it from further injury.

If you are in need of a dental crown, your Waco TX dentist, Dr. Corbet Locke, can fit you with a custom crown in as few as two dental visits. During the first visit, Dr. Locke will remove any decayed material from your damaged tooth and then take a mold of it. The mold will serve as a guide for a dental laboratory, which will create your dental crown for you. After taking the mold of your tooth, Dr. Locke may provide you with a temporary crown to wear while you wait for the lab to complete your permanent crown. Once your permanent crown is complete, it will arrive at our dental office, at which time you can attend your second dental visit. During this visit, Dr. Locke will remove your temporary crown and bond your permanent crown in place to complete your restoration.

Caring for Your Dental Crown

Many patients wonder if they must care for their crowns. The answer is a resounding yes. Proper care for a dental crown involves brushing and flossing as well as attending regular dental checkups. Bacteria tend to gather toward the base of a crown, and those that do may inflame the gums or gain access to the underlying tooth.
