Cigarettes, cigars, snuff, and dip cause cancer and other health issues. Studies now reveal that dissolvable tobacco products have the potential to cause mouth diseases, as well. These pop-into-the-mouth products replace cigarettes and other tobacco products. They are a popular alternative in social settings.
I’m Dr. Corbet Locke, a dentist in Waco, Tx, and I encourage my patients to stop using tobacco products. The health risks involved with tobacco have been documented through several studies. And now, I’ve discovered a new study pertaining to dissolvable tobacco products.
Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis released a study analyzing complex ingredients of dissolvable tobacco. Researchers discovered that the product contains mainly nicotine, finely-ground tobacco, sweetners, binders, and flavor.
The products went on sale in 2009 and were advertised as smokeless and spit-free. What manufacturers didn’t mention is that nicotine is a toxic substance, linked to oral cancer and gum disease. Health officials question the safety of the dissolvable tobacco.
Children who accidently ingest the product, may be poisoned because the packaging designs may appeal to children and be mistaken for candy, researchers fear.
Other ingredients in dissolvables can increase risk of gum disease, tooth decay, and liver damage. This study is the first to reveal the complexity of dissolvable tobacco products. Results of the research will be used to assess health effects in future studies.
