Growing up, we always heard that George Washington’s teeth were made of wood. However, through science and technology, we learned this was just a myth. In reality, President Washington had several sets of dentures. They were made from ivory, lead, gold, human, and animal teeth.

Washington endured a long history of dental problems and health issues

Most people know the main cause of periodontal disease or gum disease is plaque.  Gum disease includes gingivitis and periodontitis, which are serious infections that, left untreated, can lead to tooth loss.   In my earlier blog, Healthy Gums Equal a Healthy Mouth, we discussed what gum disease is. But what are other reasons a person… Read More

I’m Dr. Corbet Locke, a Waco-based dentist, and I recently cam across an article in the Waco Tribune Herald that got me thinking.

The article was about achieving your perfect smile with “perfectly imperfect teeth.” Recently, this topic has been popular in the dental world, mostly because it focuses on the specific goal of cosmetic dentistry.

The goal of cosmetic dentistry is to give you a healthy, beautiful, complete smile, not necessarily a flawless one. I offer many cosmetic procedures here at my office, and I prescribe them to my patients based on their needs and dental goals. There is not one procedure that will give everyone a “perfect” smile.

Do you have red, swollen, tender gums that bleed when you brush or floss or teeth? Maybe you suffer from bad breath and hardened plaque build-up at the gum line. If so, you might have gum disease and don’t even know it.

If you have gum disease, be assured that you are not alone. 80{dcbe0cd52ce35e2f156887e14605e24111ce99c14f01d3853732956d43020bdd} of Americans have gum disease, which results from the emission of bacteria from plaque and tarter build up at the gum line, which eventually irritates the sensitive gum tissue.

Once gum disease sets in, the bacteria eat away at the bonds between the teeth and gums. The human mouth is moist, dark, and warm, making it the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive.

I’m Dr. Corbet Locke, a Waco-based dentist, and I’m here to remind you about your mouth’s most amazing natural feature: your tooth enamel.

Tooth enamel, the hard, white substance covering each of your teeth, is your smile’s natural defense system. Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body. In fact, it is the second hardest naturally occurring substance, second only to diamonds. If that isn’t great protection for your teeth, then I don’t know what is!
