People seek out cosmetic dentists to achieve the smile of their dreams. One of the most sought after treatments is teeth whitening. Teeth whitening products can be purchased over-the-counter. However, they are no match for teeth whitening treatments from a dentist.
A bright, white smile will boost your confidence and take years off your appearance. After receiving a whitening treatment, there are certain foods you should avoid to ensure that your teeth stay their brightest. Here is a list of common foods and drinks that stain teeth:
Black Coffee – This is one of the worst offenders. If you can’t give up that morning cup of joe, add a splash of milk to lighten it up. Adding milk into your coffee is a great way to add calcium and vitamin D, as well.
Tea – Dark teas, like English Breakfast and Earl Grey, are the biggest staining culprits. If you are a tea drinker, switch to green, white, and herbal teas. Green tea has been proven to decrease tooth loss due to the fact it is packed with polyphenols (oral bacteria inhibitors). These teas are also light in color, therefore less staining.
Red Wine – While red wine benefits your heart and reduces inflammation, it is a horrible tooth-stainer. To avoid staining your teeth, switch to white wine or swish water around your mouth after each glass of red wine.
Blueberries – These berries, known as a , are chalked full of antioxidants. Even though they do stain teeth, that’s not enough reason to shun their health-boosting benefits. Just be vigilant in brushing your teeth, and rinse with water after eating blueberries.
Tomato Sauce – You will never convince an Italian to give up their sauce, but you can encourage them to eat spinach, lettuce, or broccoli first. These vegetables create a protective film on teeth to retard staining.
