You have probably been told you need to have your teeth cleaned on a regular basis. However, with your hectic schedule you may put off this procedure. After all, if you brush and floss everyday do you really need your teeth cleaned? Why do we need cleanings? We explain why this procedure is essential for keeping your smile healthy and disease free.
Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Cleanings
Question: How often should my teeth be cleaned?
Answer: We always recommend a routine cleaning for patients once every six months. However, if you have risk factors for periodontal disease we suggest having more frequent visits, such as once every three to four months. If you need to schedule a visit, please contact our office today.
Question: What happens during the procedure?
Answer: Our hygienist will use either a manual tool or an ultrasonic scaler to remove the plaque buildup from your teeth. Afterward, your teeth will be polished. This preventive treatment then strengthens your smile and reduces the risk of gum disease and tooth decay, both of which can develop as a result of untreated plaque buildup. Remember, brushing and flossing alone cannot remove plaque that accumulates on the teeth.
Question: What are the benefits of a cleaning?
Answer: First, your smile may appear brighter as the procedure removes minor discoloration. Second, you can enjoy fresher breath once plaque is removed from your teeth. Finally, losing the buildup can stop the gum inflammation or enamel erosion that may occur as a result of plaque.
Question: Do kids need dental cleanings?
Answer: We recommend parents begin caring for their child’s teeth as soon as they erupt. Initially, clean the teeth with a soft piece of cloth before progressing to an age appropriate toothbrush. Once the child reaches the age of four, then you need to schedule regular checkups. If a cleaning is necessary we can perform one.
