The team at our Waco dentist office takes pride in the high standards we hold ourselves to, for our patients’ best interests. We appreciate that you trust us with your smile, and our staff will provide attentive care and quality service every time you visit. For someone who isn’t knowledgeable about dentistry, the role of each staff member might not be clear. To help you understand, Waco dentist, Dr. Corbet Locke, explains the role of a key team member, the dental assistant, in this article.
Responsibilities of a Dental Assistant
First things first: a dental assistant is not a dental hygienist. Unlike hygienists, assistants do not perform dental cleanings or independently perform dental procedures. Dental assistants have two primary functions: make the patient feel comfortable and well cared for, and help the dentist during procedures. Assistants are registered with the Texas State Dental Board and receive an RDA (registered dental assistant) certificate.
Specific Duties of the Dental Assistant
- Take x-rays
- Collect health history
- Update patient records
- Take dental impressions
- Apply suction and water as needed
- Infection control and inventory in operatories
- Make oral appliances for whitening and bruxism
- Work in the front and back offices, as needed
- Attend to patients’ comfort and requests
Some assistants have expanded functions certification or special training in administering nitrous oxide, and all have CPR certification.
