The foods you eat affect your oral health. In honor of National Nutrition Month, Dr. Corbet Locke encourages you to stop by the Troy Farmer’s Market to stock up on fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, and other healthy snacks that will keep your smile strong.
Troy Farmer’s Market
Troy is located between the cities of Temple and Waco. The farmer’s market takes place every fourth Saturday until October 27th. The event will be set up at the Troy City Pavilion from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The market features farmers, growers, gardeners, artists, craftsmen, designers, and other local vendors.
Tooth-Friendly Nutrition
Since March is National Nutrition Month, it’s a great time to discuss which nutrients are best for your smile. Consider looking for these items at your local farmer’s market:
- Fruit: Oranges, kiwis, cantaloupe, mangoes, and many other fresh fruits are great sources of vitamin C, a nutrient necessary for strengthening your gum tissue and blood vessels. If you’ve recently had an oral procedure, vitamin C can help you heal and recover quicker. Additionally, crisp fruits like apples and pears increase saliva production, keeping your mouth moist and clean. You should also check the garden booths for strawberries. These fruits have lots of antioxidants and even contain a tooth-whitening property.
- Vegetables: Fresh vegetables are excellent sources of vitamin C and vitamin A. Vitamin A is important for healthy skin, vision, and teeth. Crunchy vegetables, like carrots, bell peppers, and celery also stimulate saliva production. Raw onions may be bad for your breath, but their antibacterial sulfur compounds can help kill harmful bacteria in your mouth. To get the healthiest nutrients, check the vendor stands for broccoli, spinach, bell peppers, sweet potatoes, carrots, and tomatoes.
- Cheese: Cheese is an excellent source of calcium—which is essential for building strong teeth and bones. Cheese also helps create a shield across your teeth to block stains. Oily cheeses increase your saliva production and balance the pH level in your mouth. You should be able to select a variety of cheeses from Texas Cheese House of Lorena, one of the Troy market vendors.
