As we’ve discussed before, dental implants are an increasingly popular choice for replacing missing teeth. While dental bridges or dentures also provide tooth replacement, an implant can offer a number of additional benefits. What are the benefits of dental implants? Can anyone benefit from this unique tooth replacement system?
Implants vs. Other Prosthetics
How do they differ from other common methods of tooth replacement? First, a dental bridge or a denture only replaces the crown, or visible portions of the teeth. Dental implants actually use a biocompatible titanium post to act as a new root, creating a more secure tooth. In addition, the implant is fixed for a more secure option that doesn’t slip when you eat or speak.
The Benefits
The benefits of a dental implant include:
- Lifetime tooth replacement
- Natural looking
- Helps prevent loss of jawbone density
- Require the same level of maintenance as natural teeth
- You can eat without difficulty
If you have any questions about the implant process then please contact our office. We can see if you have the healthy gums and adequate jawbone tissue necessary to be a candidate for a long lasting and lifelike tooth replacement option.
Receiving Your Dental Implants
How do you obtain one? First, the doctor uses digital x-rays and intraoral cameras to decide the best place to insert the titanium post. After placement, the area will need to heal for a brief period. During this period, a process known as osseointegration occurs. The process involves the bond tissue bonding with the post as if it’s a natural tooth root. Finally, an abutment will be added that supports a dental crown, completing the new tooth. If you are receiving an implant-supported prosthetic, then you will have between six and eight posts inserted into each arch to secure the new prosthetic.
